Thames Water, the UK’s biggest water company, has announced plans to cut 25% of its workforce by 2010 as part of a significant cost-trimming exercise.

The German-owned firm has said that it wants to keep compulsory redundancies to a minimum but plans to axe 300 jobs each year for the next five years. However, the GMB union pledged to back “frontline” posts.

Jeremy Pelczer, chief executive of Thames Water, said: “As we seek to drive the efficiencies needed, some of them will come through smarter procurement, but some will come from different ways of working that involve job cuts.”

Thames Water has around 13 million customers and employs 6,000 people.
