Retailers are ramping up their efforts to get customers into their supermarkets ahead of the summer months when outdoor dining and drinking are back on the agenda.

Last month, Easter deals on hot cross buns and chocolate dominated the supermarket offers available down the British aisles.

But, with May having two bank holidays, YourMoney.com’s monthly round-up this time ranges from huge fresh produce reductions to new cocktail recipes ‘in a tin’.

The latter are being sold by Aldi, which was once again named the cheapest supermarket, offering a weekly shop for a third cheaper than its rival Waitrose.

The budget retailer has introduced a fresh range of cocktail ‘tinnies’ ahead of the bank holidays in May and the potential for what the store calls ‘summer sipping’.

Aldi’s set on the summer

From just 99p per can, shoppers can enjoy its new pre-mixed cans of Stefanoff vodka, Samuel Joe whiskey, and Cocobay rum. Customers can enjoy savings of up to 59% on its bigger brand rivals, including Smirnoff and Jack Daniels.

  • Cocobay Pineapple (99p, 250ml)
  • Stefanoff Passionfruit Martini (99p, 250ml)
  • Old Hopking Mojito (99p, 250ml)

Aldi has also jumped onto the air fryer phenomenon and introduced a 7.2 litre version for just £59.99. Shoppers can save £70.00 against the Phillips equivalent available in John Lewis (RRP £129.99).

Waitrose makes another reduction sweep

Waitrose, which is part of the John Lewis Group, is making reductions of its own too. The premium retailer is dropping prices by an average of 7%, which rises to 10% for produce.

In total, over 200 popular products will decrease in price, with a big focus on organic ingredients and fresh produce. Weekly shop favourites such as chicken breasts, potatoes, butter and cream have all had their prices cut. These reductions apply to both its online delivery service and supermarkets.

Here is a selection of the products with price decreases.

Sainsbury’s replaces Price Lock commitment

Elsewhere, rival retailer Sainsbury’s has launched a new price commitment across over 1,000 products. The new branding replaces Sainsbury’s ‘Price Lock’ and runs alongside its ‘Aldi Price Match’ campaign and Nectar Card deals.

Products with price reductions include everyday cupboard essentials like PG Tips Tea Bags and Quaker Rolled Porridge Oats. Other items include Sensodyne Daily Care Gentle Whitening Sensitive Toothpaste and Surf Tropical Lily Washing Powder.

Meanwhile, Morrisons is rewarding its More Card customers with 100 ‘More Card’ points for every £1 they spend in its 396 cafés and 19 Brew Bars.

It has also added the following meals to its menu.

Hot options (£4.50):

  • Meatball marinara melt sub
  • Chargrilled vegetable and basil pesto panini
  • Oak smoked ham and cheese toastie
  • Three cheese toastie

Wraps, salads and sandwiches (£4.00):

  • Southern fried chipotle chicken wrap
  • Tuna crunch salad
  • Chicken and smoked bacon sub
  • Ham and mature cheese sandwich
  • Double egg and cress sandwich

Waitrose has also added a ‘quieter hour’ between 2pm and 3pm from Monday to Thursday every week, designed to help people with autism as they go about their supermarket shop.

During this time, there will be lower levels of lighting, no music playing and checkout beeps with a lower volume.
