Commuters in London face a painful rush hour as a power outage has caused the London Underground to shut down.

Train services halted on every tube line today due to a “National Grid issue” impacting the entire network.

The entire service is suspended on the Bakerloo, Waterloo & City and Weaver lines.

Severe delays have hit the Elizabeth and Mildmay lines, while the lines that are part suspended are the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines. The Central, Circle, District, Hammersmith, Metropolitan, Victoria lines and trains on the Dockland Light Railway (DLR) are unaffected by the power outage.

The issue arose at 2.30pm and continued for over two hours until power was restored. Meanwhile, the Suffragette line for stations covering Gospel Oak to Barking are also down, but this is due to a separate fire issue.

A Transport for London (TfL) spokesperson said the issue was caused due to an outage in South West London for “a matter of minutes” and “everything shut down”.

They said: “When the power goes out, the trains will have stopped, obviously. There’s emergency power on trains and stations so everything wouldn’t have gone completely black.

“If you were on there… the trains would have stopped and we would have cleared some stations because there’s no electricity; it might not necessarily be safe for them to be open.”

They added: “Some people would have probably been stuck in a tunnel for a little bit of time.”

If your journey was delayed longer than 15 minutes, you can apply for a refund on your Oyster card via the TfL refund section. Should you use a contactless payment and there was a delay for longer than a quarter of an hour, the refund will go back into the account once the refund is reviewed, which can take up to 10 days.

Power returning ‘could take some time’

Before millions of commuters head home after work, the spokesperson added that services can “take some time” to get back to normal after a power outage.

Last year, 5,000 TfL customers had their bank details compromised by hackers, with Oyster card data accessed by criminals.

Hackers took customer names, contact details, bank account and sort code numbers from travellers, but there was no impact on customers’ banking.
