Lloyds Banking Group confirms it will close 60 branches across its Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland network from autumn.

In total, 28 Lloyds Bank, 17 Halifax and 15 Bank of Scotland branches will close between October 2024 and June 2025 (see full list below).

It said all staff working at these branches will be offered a role at another branch or in another part of its business.

The banking giant said customer preference for “ease and convenience” has led to more than 19 million people now using its app.

At the same time, use of branches in these 60 locations has fallen by an average of 52% (and up to 68%) in the last five years.

However, Lloyds said all of the branch locations announced for closure have alternative options for accessing cash nearby, such as a Post Office, or free-to-use ATM.

Further, 28 new ‘community bankers’ will be introduced, in addition to those already helping communities, to provide targeted banking support where a branch is closing (see below for more information and locations).

A Lloyds Banking Group spokesperson said: “Mobile banking is more popular than ever, with over 19 million customers choosing our app to manage their money. Alongside our app, customers can bank online, over the phone, at a Banking Hub, a Post Office or by speaking to one of our Community Bankers.”

Over 100 branches flagged for closure this year alone

So far in 2024, Lloyds Banking Group has announced 114 branches will close.

Earlier in March this year, it confirmed more than 50 branches were set to close between July 2024 and January 2025.

It added that once all previously announced closures are complete, Lloyds Banking Group will have 947 branches, split between 466 Lloyds Bank, 373 Halifax and 108 Bank of Scotland locations.

Community bankers and banking hubs

‘Community bankers’ provide face-to-face services to customers in their local areas, including making payments, account enquiries and online banking support.

These will be introduced in the following areas:

Lloyds Bank: Blyth, Chesham, Cranbrook, Kenilworth, Kettering, Leighton Buzzard, Liskeard, Market Drayton, Presteigne, St Ives Cambridge, Stow-on-the-Wold and Wadebridge.

Halifax: Bishops Stortford, Blyth, Evesham, Harwich, Heswall, Leighton Buzzard, Maghull Westway, Ormskirk, Stratford-upon-Avon, Rugby and Witham.

Bank of Scotland: Callander, Campbeltown, Kyle, Mallaig and North Berwick.

Meanwhile, LINK, the UK’s cash access and ATM network, has recommended a banking hub in 14 locations: Alcester, Ashbourne, Bathgate, Cowdenbeath, Linlithgow, Littlehampton, Newton Stewart, Rothesay, Sheffield Firth Park, Spennymoor Cheapside, Stanley, Warwick, Wick and Woodbridge.

Banking hubs are a shared banking space, similar to a traditional bank branch, but available to everyone. The hubs will consist of a counter service operated by Post Office employees, where customers of any bank can withdraw and deposit cash, make bill payments and carry out regular banking transactions.

They also offer private spaces where customers can speak to community bankers from their own bank for more complicated matters that require specialist knowledge or privacy. The banks will be working on a rotating basis, so there will be staff from different banks available on different days.

In total, LINK has recommended 146 banking hubs following a plethora of bank branch closure announcements across the industry. There are currently 60 banking hubs up and running in the UK.

Lloyds added that it will be working with industry partners to provide ATMs in Birmingham Kitts Green, Cranbrook, Gillingham (Kent), Littlehampton and Presteigne.
